Insurance Built for Auto Service Businesses

Auto service businesses carry risks that standard commercial policies routinely underestimate — and the gaps tend to surface at the worst possible time.

Why Auto Service Businesses Need Specialized Coverage

MJM Global Insurance Brokerage Group works with auto repair shops, body and collision centers, car washes, quick lube operations, tire shops, detailing studios, muffler and exhaust shops, and the full range of automotive service businesses. We understand how these operations work, where their exposures concentrate, and how to place coverage that holds up when a claim is filed.

A general commercial policy is not designed for the realities of an auto service operation. Customer vehicles on your premises, employees operating those vehicles, flammable materials in use throughout the day, and the potential for a mechanical error to create downstream damage — these are not edge cases. They are the daily operating environment.

The right program accounts for each of them, without leaving your business exposed through exclusions or sublimits that were never built with your industry in mind.

Coverage We Place for Auto Service Businesses

The following coverages apply across auto repair shops, body and collision centers, car washes, quick lube operations, tire shops, detailing businesses, muffler and exhaust shops, and related automotive service operations.

  • Garage Liability: covers bodily injury and property damage arising from your operations, including customer vehicles in your care
  • Garagekeepers Legal Liability: protects you when a customer vehicle is damaged, stolen, or destroyed while in your custody
  • Commercial Property: covers your building, equipment, tools, and inventory against fire, theft, vandalism, and other covered losses
  • Workers Compensation: addresses employee injuries in a physically demanding, hazard-present work environment
  • Commercial Auto: covers owned, leased, and non-owned vehicles used in business operations, including road test exposures
  • Commercial General Liability: baseline protection for third-party bodily injury and property damage claims arising from your premises or operations
  • Commercial Umbrella: extends your liability limits above underlying policies when a claim exceeds primary coverage
  • Inland Marine: covers tools, equipment, and mobile property transported to or from job sites
  • Equipment Breakdown: addresses mechanical and electrical failure of lifts, compressors, diagnostic systems, and other critical shop equipment
  • Cyber Liability: protects against data breaches and system failures affecting customer records, payment data, and business operations
  • Commercial Crime: covers employee theft, forgery, and fraudulent transactions
  • Employment Practices Liability (EPLI): addresses claims from employees related to wrongful termination, discrimination, and harassment
  • Business Owners Policy (BOP): packages general liability and property coverage for qualifying operations, often the most efficient starting point for smaller shops

A Brokerage That Works Across the Auto Services Industry

MJM Global is independently owned, which means we are not aligned to any single carrier and not constrained by a preferred markets list that was built for someone else's book of business. We work with top-rated insurance providers throughout the United States to find the program that fits your operation — not the one that is easiest for us to place.

Our clients range from single-location independent shops to multi-site operations, and we work with businesses at every stage of growth. What does not change is the level of attention we bring to each account. You will not be handed off to a service center or managed by a junior account team. You will work with people who know your industry and are reachable when you need them.

  • What is the difference between garage liability and garagekeepers legal liability?

Garage liability covers bodily injury and property damage your business causes to others — similar to general liability, but designed for automotive operations. Garagekeepers legal liability is a separate coverage that specifically addresses damage to customer vehicles while they are in your care, custody, or control. Both are typically necessary for any shop that takes possession of customer vehicles.
  • Does a standard BOP cover an auto repair shop?

A standard Business Owners Policy is a useful starting point for some smaller operations, but it does not include garage liability or garagekeepers coverage. Auto service businesses generally need a program that layers those coverages in alongside property and general liability. We will assess your operation and build the right structure from the ground up.
  • Are car washes and detailing shops covered under the same programs as repair shops?

The core coverages apply across auto service categories, but the specific program structure, carrier selection, and policy terms will vary based on your operation type, services offered, and revenue profile. A detailing studio has different exposures than a full-service collision center, and the coverage should reflect that. We place programs across the full range of auto service businesses.
  • What if I have employees who drive customer vehicles for road tests or delivery?

That exposure falls under your commercial auto and garage liability programs, and it needs to be addressed explicitly — not assumed to be covered. We review how your employees interact with customer vehicles and make sure the policy language accounts for it.
  • Can MJM Global help if I have multiple locations?

Yes. We work with multi-location auto service operations and can structure programs that cover all locations under a coordinated policy or portfolio, depending on what produces the best coverage terms and economics for your business.
